A student of a local polytechnic (politeknik) has approached WORLD OF BUZZ to share a highly upsetting story that has happened in his friend’s class recently.
Lecturer casually slides in the K-word during online class
On 14th October, a lecturer of the said polytechnic during an online class addressed a certain race using an offensive term. This upset a student (Rita, not her real name) of the said race deeply. She was very disturbed by this throughout the lesson. So at the end of the class, she decided to express her feelings.
When the lecturer at the end of the class said “itu sahaja untuk hari ini (that is all for today)”, Rita got his attention by saying “excuse me, Sir”. To which he rudely replied “WHAT?!”.
The student nonetheless continued being extremely polite in her confrontation
“Sir, sorry to interrupt you. This is nothing personal. Just wanted to tell you that the word you used just now, the k***ng word, I think it is not so appropriate … I respect you Sir … so I felt so bad … I’m so sorry Sir …”.
She apologised profusely if she was rude and if the lecturer was taken aback by her questioning him. She also repeated many times that she respects him a lot. She ensured to address him as Sir at the end of each sentence to be polite and respectful.
The lecturer was very arrogant in his reply and was unapologetic
He said it is very difficult to upset him as he is very thick skinned. He also said in this situation he’s not the one who is upset but rather she is.
“Saya kulit tebal lah sikit, sorry to say eh. Susah sikit nak bagi saya upset.”
“I don’t feel offended, but you, the student feel offended.”
Lecturer brings this up in another online class
The lecturer then decides to talk about Rita in another class. He said that “there is a student who got pissed with me when i said … said like the k***ng word … it’s an Indian student … the Indian student is pissed with me”.
“Ada pelajar benggang dengan saya bila saya cakap … cakap macam k***ng kan … ha, itu pelajar India lah … pelajar India itu benggang dengan saya.”
He then says in a high pitched voice,
“The thing is you, YOU, YOU, YOU, you sendiri … cakap lain, tulis lain, cakap lain, dengar lain … wow.”
Twitter user @SenoritaHabee has also urged WORLD OF BUZZ to cover this shameful incident. She questions if “Timah” is considered a sensitive issue, how can a lecture calling a student the K-word not be sensitive too.
“Kalau ‘timah’ isu sensitif, takkan isu pensyarah yang panggil pelajar India ‘K’ tak sensitif?“
Many netizens are asking Syed Saddiq for his help on this issue. They are very angered by what has happened.
Pemuda MIC Kedah has demanded for a public apology from the lecturer.
These students are scared to report this matter directly to the management of the polytechnic for the fear of losing marks. It is really sad that student who are already stressed having to adapt to online lessons and exams are having to go through discrimination as well. When we thought we are moving towards a modern Malaysia, these sort of stories are a major set back.
