Many people love drinking bubble tea but as any boba lover will know, it definitely doesn’t come cheap as one cup can cost an average of RM10 or more, depending on where you buy it from. This doesn’t seem like a lot of money but a few ringgit here and there really adds up!
A Malaysian netizen wrote on her Facebook page and calculated the cost of feeding her bubble tea habit, and discovered that from January to April she had drunk the equivalent of a round-trip ticket to Thailand. According to China Press, she got addicted to bubble tea as she felt that it was really delicious because she loves the taste of the tea and the chewy pearls in every mouthful.
Because she loves it so much, she would try the offerings from each new shop that opened and due to this, her friends dubbed her the “Bubble Tea Expert.” She said that she felt proud of this title and as a result, she would always try to be the first to try any new bubble tea.
She realised that there were a lot of new bubble tea outlets that opened in May, and many people started asking her whether she had tried the new brands or not. However, she was shocked out of her bubble tea craze one day when her friend said, “I look at the photos you posted and I just simply counted, the amount you spend on the bubble tea can buy a round-trip ticket to Thailand already. I thought you wanted to go to Taiwan? With the money you spent on bubble tea for another two months you can buy flight tickets there already.”
After that conversation with her friend, she realised that her addiction was very expensive and her friend was right. She even wrote down her calculations as below:
January to April = 4 months
1 week x 2 cups = 8 cups in a month (1 month = 4 weeks)
4 months x 8 cups = 32 cups
32 cups x RM12 to RM15 = RM384 to RM480
Now that she put it like that, it is quite a lot of money! In addition, she said that sometimes she would drink more than two cups of bubble tea in a week. Finally, she decided to quit drinking in June and continued doing so for four months, and at the end of it she said that she managed to save money to achieve her dream of going to Taiwan. By just quitting bubble tea for a few months!
Wow! Perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate your bubble tea habits and the money you save can probably allow you to travel to many places around the world!
