Well this is a rarity of sorts!
The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) celebrated their 71st anniversary in a big way yesterday (11th May), and what caught netizens’ attention isn’t the celebration itself but a mother and son duo.
In a true-blue 1Malaysia moment, a Chinese mother and son decided to join in on the festivities, according to The New Straits Times.
43 year-old Ken Chow and his 73 year-old mother, Lee Yoke Hua, both decided to attend the event to show solidarity for their Malay friends.
They were apparently at the event since 10 in the morning and waited the whole day for it to start at 6.45pm!
Ken reportedly has many friends who are Umno members. His mother also wanted to follow her son to experience the fun environment.
“We didn’t feel out of place at all, even though there are hardly any Chinese folks around, as we are all Malaysians.”
“It’s always good to mingle around and get to know other fellow Malaysians.”
Ken’s mother also said one of the other reasons she wanted to join her son was to chat with other elderly folk at the event.
The celebration took place in the Bukit Jalil Stadium, filled with thousands of people showing their support for the party.
The Umno 71st anniversary celebration was a hot topic among Malaysian netizens yesterday as well.
According to Malaysian Insight, University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) students were instructed by their school that they had to attend this event because it was compulsory.
On top of that, they even had to memorise and sing a song for Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, called ‘Sayangi Najib‘!
Well, kudos to Ken and his mother for embracing the 1Malaysia spirit!
