Chinese New Year is the time when everyone celebrates and reunites with their families. So, it’s great to see such a loving and supportive family ring in the new year in the best way possible!
Six years ago in 2012, a then 61-year-old Hew Poh unexpectedly lost his right hand during an accident at a steel factory in Johor Bahru, where he worked. His hand was reportedly stuck in a machine, which crushed his fingers.
He told Harian Metro,
“The doctor told me that there was no choice but to amputate my right hand because all of my fingers were too crushed. After that incident, I stopped working because I could not work with just one hand and it was even more exhausting.”
However, the now 67-year-old Hew can finally live an easier life because his son and daughter-in-law surprised him with a robotic 3D printed hand!
“This Chinese New Year is definitely very meaningful to me, because I finally have my hand back. Although it’s a prosthetic, I am still very grateful because it’s nearly as functional as a normal hand.”
Hew also said he’s very happy that he can help the rest of his family prepare for the Chinese New Year festivities this year, because he never had the chance to help out much before. Aww!
The 67-year-old’s daughter-in-law, 34-year-old How Siew Chen also told the daily that she and her husband planned to give him the Delta Bionic -EX111 after reading about Sujana Mohd Rejab, who creates these prosthetic devices for the disabled community.
“We ordered this prosthetic about two months ago because we felt so bad seeing him struggle without his left hand. We gave it to him as a way to show our love for him, so that he can go on with life more comfortably.”
“We’re so happy to see him being able to write and hold things with his new hand.”
What a great way to ring in Chinese New Year! We hope Hew and his family have a lovely time celebrating. Xin Nian Kuai Le! 😀
