One of the most common habits that some people have is leaving their MyKad, or most commonly referred to as IC (Identity Card) at home when they go out for just a quick moment. Whether if it’s to buy something or to go and grab a drink with friends at a nearby mamak, you may choose to just bring some small amount of cash with you and leave the house without your IC.
But, did you know that being caught without your IC is a punishable crime in Malaysia?
Yup, it is. According to the National Registration Act 1959 (Revised 1972), being caught without that little blue card that carries all your information that proves you are a legal citizen of Malaysia is going to land you in some pretty big trouble. This is especially the case if authorities request to check your identification.
If found guilty, you may be liable to face up to RM20,000 in fines, or up to three years prison for not bringing your MyKad with you. Yes, seriously.
So if you’re in the habit of leaving your MyKad behind when you go jalan-jalan, know that you are running a very high risk of landing yourself in some hot water!
