As we all know, the weather has been very temperamental all over the world and not just in our country.
Recently, the Toyama prefecture in Japan was hit by torrential rainfalls that lasted from 12-13 July. According to the Japan Times, the prefecture recorded a record-high downpour of 170.5 millimeters in Kamiichi.
It is said that the excessive rainfall had caused mudslides to occur and a local congressman had passed away because of that.
Nobuhiko Akaike, 65, who is a member of the Nanto City Council went around in the heavy rain and asked people in the neighbourhood to flee as there might be a chance that a nearby river will overflow.
At about 2am on 13 July, he could not be seen anymore and in the morning, authorities started their search for him.
They were able to find his body near a building that had collapsed due to a mudslide and believe that he was caught in it when he was on the way to warn other residents to flee, reported NHK.
The mayor of Nanto city, Mikio Tanaka said:
“I still can’t accept it. As the leader of this area, he had a sense of responsibility and checked on each person until the very end, it’s really hard to believe that this tragedy happened.”
We hope that Nobuhiko Akaike will rest in peace.
