At 44 years old, Johor Menteri Besar (MB) Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi is one of the youngest leaders to helm a State Government in our country, with his appointment after the Johor State Election last year coming as a surprise to many.
However, some one year after being MB, Onn Hafiz has proved himself to be a very popular leader amongst the people of Johor.
Many praised Onn Hafiz’s commitment to going on the ground to experience himself and fixing the issues faced by the common people, such as his several spot checks at the Johor Bahru CIQ building.
Recently, the Johor MB earned plaudits again for going on the ground, or more accurately, into the river, to promote the importance of keeping our waterway clean.
In a Facebook post, Onn Hafiz shared how he, alongside several Johor assemblypersons got their hands dirty to help clean the Skudai River to iterate the “Johor Bersih” or Clean Johor agenda.
The Johor MB asserted,
“All of us have the responsibility to preserve the cleanliness of the rivers in Johor.”
He added that almost 30 tonnes of garbage have been collected at the outskirts of Skudai River since 2 years ago and accordingly, the Johor MB was presented with a proposal to develop a Skudai River Special Area Plan which seeks to mitigate the impact of pollution on the river, which includes 10 high impact projects.
Onn Hafiz stressed that these projects must be implemented in an integrated manner and that such an initiative is crucial to the State Government’s efforts to accomplish the Johor Bersih agenda.
In the post’s comments section, many Johoreans and Malaysians in general praise the Johor MB’s efforts and willingness to get his hands dirty to set a good example to the public for the importance of keeping our rivers clean.
One commenter congratulated Onn Hafiz for the initiatives and good optics, as well as hoped that other leaders can follow his good example. Meanwhile, another commenter thanked the Johor MB and hoped that these efforts can be continuous and expand the initiative to drains and sewers in the state.
