Following the end of the Covid-19 pandemic and the start of the endemic phase in April of last year, our tourism industry was hoping that Malaysians would flock to local destinations such as Langkawi for some long-needed vacationing.
It appears that that didn’t exactly happen though.
According to a report by The Malaysian Insight, industry experts shared that Langkawi has failed to attract the crowd that is expected of the duty-free destination following the pandemic.
Among the reasons stated include the high prices and unreliable ferry services, causing local and foreign tourists alike to opt for Thailand as a vacation spot instead.
Many have since taken to social media to double down on this
While price is very much a factor…
…people have also pointed out that certain restrictions have also affected their decision to skip Langkawi and head to Thailand instead.
The local authorities really need to look into potential ways to attract not just locals but also foreign travelers to Langkawi, without us and them having to break the bank.
Why do you think Malaysians prefer to travel to Thailand for their holidays instead of local destinations like Langkawi? And how do you think the authorities can make Langkawi great again?
