A video showing university students in Terengganu dancing together during a Gala night went viral a few weeks ago. The incident did not sit well with Malaysians; some felt the university students went a little overboard during the concert.
The debate about having concerts in universities even captured the attention of the Minister of Higher Education, who stated that concerts in universities are not a problem.
However, it seems that the university has been found to be breaching other rules instead.
According to a report by Berita Harian, the public university in Terengganu has since been fined RM25,000 for organising a concert without permission.
The mayor of Kuala Terengganu, Rosli Latif, said the compound notice was submitted to its management last week.
He said that the university involved was subject to action in accordance with the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 2002.
“The management involved have been given 14 days to explain the compound, and further action will be taken if they fail to do so,” he said.
Commenting further, Rosli said that the management held the concert without permission, and the investigation also found that no permit application had been submitted.
