The nation was surprised today by the Prime Minister’s announcement of the free rides for all RapidKL public transportations for a month effective today.
Some Malaysians have questioned whether the KTMB services will follow in the same footsteps. According to New Straits Times, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob also stated today (June 16) that the people will be able to enjoy free KTM trips for a month!
The free KTM rides involve the Tanjung Malim – Port Klang and the Batu Caves – Pulau Sebang routes. The announcement on KTM free rides was made concurrently when the Prime Minister officiated the first phase of the MRT Putrajaya line this morning.
“The federal government has set aside RM140 million and RM15 million to subsidise the free rides involving the RapidKL public transportation and the two Komuter routes, respectively,” he said.
It was done not just to encourage more people to utilise public transportation for commuting to work, but also to encourage people to use it for leisure on weekends and public holidays.
“As more people use public transportation, traffic congestion will decrease,” Sabri noted.
In addition, he stated that the government may look into the idea of extending the free public transit rides beyond the one-month timeframe.
Are you excited over the announcement and will you give LRT and KTM a try within the month?
