A Korean man has admitted in court to killing his girlfriend of four years on 20 October last year at their home in Gunsan, North Jeolla province, claiming she belittled him.

The man, who is in his 40s, also confessed to pretending to be her by texting her family for nearly a year after the incident.

He hid her body in a kimchi fridge

According to The Chosun Daily, the victim had berated him for not following her advice on stock investments. He later strangled her and hid her body in a kimchi fridge that he purchased.

He then texted the victim’s family using her phone and even took out a bank loan of KRW88 million (~RM249,069) under her name, using the money to pay rent for a villa she owned.

Suspicion grew when the victim’s younger sister realised her sibling was only replying through text messages. One message even said, “I am safe and well,” after the victim failed to answer her call.

This prompted the sister to lodge a police report in September.

The victim’s body was found intact

Police later managed to get through on another call, which was answered by a woman. She admitted to officers that she was not the victim and said the defendant had asked her to take the call while she was living with him at the time.

According to Korea JoongAng Daily, police discovered the victim’s body mostly intact, as the man had set the kimchi fridge to –32°C. During questioning, he confessed that he killed his girlfriend in a fit of anger after feeling belittled by her.

At the first trial yesterday (13 November), the defendant pleaded guilty to murder, concealing or abandoning a body, and computer-related fraud.
