There are some among us who, while dining in at eateries, prefer to have their drinks in takeaway cups or packets so that they can take their drink along with them when leaving the restaurant.
This could be because they know they won’t finish their drink at the makan shop and would rather not waste it. But, is that so wrong?
A Malaysian man, 秦朝太子, took to a Facebook group to share how a staff member at a Kuchai Lama kopitiam had allegedly told him he couldn’t dine in as he decided to order his drink to-go in a takeaway packet (ikat tepi), despite him already having been served his food.
He wrote, “I just wanted to get everyone’s opinion, this is in no way an attack on anyone. I was just having breakfast at a kopitiam in Kuchai Lama and I usually don’t order a drink. But, because I wanted the Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun that comes with sambal, I decided to order a drink“.
Due to the fact that he had his friends, foreign workers who couldn’t dine there, waiting for him, he decided to eat his meal quickly while having his drink to-go so that he could take it with him when he was done eating.
Telling a foreign waitress there that he wanted a Chinese tea in a takeaway packet, the woman allegedly responded, “If you want, you can only drink here. If you want a takeaway drink, you cannot sit here anymore.”
Feeling bewildered by the rule, he packed up his food, grabbed his drink and left the restaurant.
“So, I had to pack up and leave immediately. What does that even mean?”
Considering the fact that he was having his food to dine in, perhaps the staff member should have just allowed him to continue sitting at the kopitiam while he ate.
Do you think that the rule is reasonable? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
