A LinkedIn post from a European-based Circular Economist and ‘Top Green Voice’ has recently gone viral in Malaysia and Singapore for mistaking the former for the latter.
The post, by Vojtech Vosecky was posted on Wednesday (19 April 2023) and urged for city climate agendas around the world to be about construction and demolition.
Vosecky stressed that we must go circular by building with less, for longer, instead of doing it like the 20th century with lots of steel, aluminium, wood, concrete, plastic, glass or bricks.
He added that cities need to use waste a resource and work with what they’ve already taken from the ground. Attached with the post are seven before and after photos of seven cities around the globe.
However, there’s something amiss with the second photo, as Vosecky mistakenly labelled Kuala Lumpur as Singapore.
In the photo, you can clearly see that both before and after photos are of Kuala Lumpur as the iconic Lembaga Tabung Haji building can be seen in the first photo while the Petronas Twin Towers and Kuala Lumpur Tower can be seen in the second.
The error led the post to become viral in Singapore and Malaysia, with the screenshot of the post being shared across social media platforms in both countries.
The post also became viral on LinkedIn, with many commenters pointing out the error to Vosecky, with most of it being quite funny and sarcastic.
One commenter sarcastically said,
“Oh man, Singapore has changed so much since 2004! We have changed so much, we even changed from KL Malaysia to Singapore in only 19 Years!”
Meanwhile, another commenter pointed out that Vosecky had mistaken Kuala Lumpur for Singapore, which doesn’t make him look too professional. Another LinkedIn user shared the same sentiment but was not too kind in her words, saying that it is a shame for someone who labelled himself as a ‘Top Voice’ to use wrong image information and doesn’t even try to change or amend the post.
Another commenter asserted,
“Please correct the mistake on the second picture about Singapore. It is from Malaysia ?? There’s no reason to keep it and spread further misinformation. There’s an edit function on LinkedIn. And always fact-check before posting. Thank you.”
As of the time of writing, the post remained the same without any changes. However, Vosecky did comment on the post saying that he is aware of the mistake and hoped that both cities would forgive him. He asserted,
“Folks, I know there is a mistake. The second picture is not Singapore, it’s Kuala Lumpur. I hope both cities will forgive me. However, the message stands! Singapore went through a very similar process as well. Thanks for correcting me!”
