Sneakers have come a long way, transforming themselves from functional clothing to fashion icons – seen as a form of self-expression and high art.
Best depicted in Ben Affleck’s Air, which best exemplifies 1984 sneaker culture which began with a marriage of Nike and Michael Jordan, more and more local celebs and VIPs are taking a deep dive into this culture – which includes former Minister of Youth and Sport, Khairy Jamaluddin (KJ).
“I have a huge number of shoes in my rotation. I do wear my Gazelles because of its origins,” he shared.
“But it is not the most comfortable to wear as it is very narrow.”
Speaking more about his Red Wings, he also mentioned a local brand that caught everyone’s attention in 2023, the Voltra.
“I was about to wear one today. But it didn’t fit with the ensemble that I had on today,” he explained.
Wearing a lot of local brands, he also mentions that his jeans were made in Besut, Terengganu, and mentioned the Voltra as his daily driver.

Kudos, KJ, for giving local brands a shout-out. What is your daily driver? Is it local, or just another pair of AF1s? Share it with us in the comments section below.
