The Kelantan government will apply for an allocation of RM500 million from the Federal Government to provide a more systematic and efficient sewerage system in the state.
Kelantan Works, Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development Committee Exco, Datuk Dr Izani Husin shared that the application for this will be made through the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which is expected to be tabled in Parliament in the 3rd quarter of 2025.
According to him, the plan outlined in the State Structure Plan 2040 is to build a centralised sewerage system in Bandar Baru Tanjong, with a capacity of 140,000 population equivalents (PE).
“Previously, to make this plan a reality, the Kelantan State Government requested an allocation of RM500 million from the Federal Government through the 11th RMK,”
“This allocation was approved through the Second Round Plan (RP2) under the 11th RMK as a loan and converted to a grant in 2017. However, the project approval was withdrawn in 2018 after the 14th General Election,” he said during the 15th Kelantan State Legislative Assembly (DUN).
He went on to explain that the Kelantan state government has continued to apply for the allocations through RP1, RP2, and RP4 in the 12th RMK.
“However, our applications were always rejected. The applications will continue in the 13th RMK,”
“Most residents in this state still rely on individual septic tanks and substandard systems causing sewage to pollute the environment and groundwater resources,” he added.
In Kelantan, residents currently have to get a lorry with machinery to come to their homes and suck out the sewage from their septic tanks.
