When we think back on the food sold in our school canteens, sticks of sausages and nuggets were some of the best-selling items.
Those processed food items were tasty snacks, but they did not offer much nutritional value, especially for children or teens who are still growing.
This canteen in a Kelantan primary school has been praised as they do not offer food that has no nutritional value.
The Nutrition Unit of Kelantan’s Health Department on Facebook shared that the canteen in SK Hamzah 1, Machang, Kelantan, did a stellar job at ensuring that the students will have a stellar meal during recess.
In the series of photos, we can see that the canteen offered fresh cut fruits, a choice of dry or soup noodles, some form of fried protein or vegetables and drinks.
“There are no junk food, processed food such as fries, sausaged or nuggets, chips or tea or coffee.”
Many netizens praised the school. However, some said that the canteen was still selling fried stuff and the noodles looked plain.
The local government unit said, “Of course, steaming or grilling will be better than frying. However, we need to think of how well the children will take it as well. It would not be good if the food doesn’t sell.”
“What’s important is that they are using real meat and not processed meat like those in sausages. As for the bihun, we have already asked them to include more vegetables and protein.”
The canteen operators have to start somewhere, and a healthy lifestyle is not just achieved in a day. This is already a very good start, and we hope that more schools will be able to replicate it.
