Recently, it was reported that a woman who had intended to lodge a police report following a car accident claims that she was denied entry into the station because of her attire.
She accused that an officer at the Kajang police station refused her entry because she was “wearing shorts”.
“The officer saw what I was wearing (through the car window) and told me to leave. I was wearing Bermudas that covered my knees.”
She claimed that the officer was adamant and refused to listen to her reason that she would have to travel some distance to change.
“It was ridiculous. How can they deny me the right to lodge a report unless I change my clothes? He told me he didn’t care and that even ministers wouldn’t be allowed to enter (if they were dressed that way),” she said.
Meanwhile, she claimed that she had gone to the Batu Sembilan police station to lodge a report but was told to go to the Kajang police station instead and that if the officers at the first station had not reprimanded her over what she was wearing, she wondered why she was turned away at the Kajang police station.
“If there was such a rule (shorts not allowed), then somebody would have told me at the first police station. It makes no sense. I asked the officer for his badge number and name to file a complaint, but he refused to give them to me.”
Kajang police admits to denying her entry
Following the news, the Kajang district police has since released a statement where they admitted that they did deny her entrance to the police station.
However, they reiterated their stance which was that her attire went against its dress code.
In a statement shared on social media, Kajang district police chief Zaid Hassan said the woman was “wearing shorts that were above her knees”.
He added that the officer on duty asked the woman, who had gone to the station to lodge a report after a car accident, to change her clothes.
“The woman was dissatisfied and refused to heed the officer’s advice in the beginning and had also provoked the officer.”
Zaid said that the officer then advised her again to change into a more suitable attire if she wanted to conduct any business in the police station and that she eventually left and returned after 20 minutes wearing long pants.
He also stated that the police station had not encountered any issues regarding visitor attire and that the dress code for visitors was posted at the control post for reference.
