The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has just announced that it is cancelling its Merdeka Eve 2024 celebration on the night of 30 August at Dataran Merdeka following high-profile incidents that happened in and around Kuala Lumpur.
Taking to its official Facebook page, DBKL announced that the ‘Sambutan Ambang Merdeka 2024’ celebration has been cancelled to respect the victims of several incidents that happened around Kuala Lumpur recently.
While DBKL didn’t mention the specifics, it is believed that the city council was referring to the tragic sinkhole incident at Jalan Masjid India on 23 August.
The authorities are still hard at work in their search and rescue operation (SAR) for the victim, identified as 48-year-old Indian national Viyayaletchumy.
Following the incident, Jalan Masjid India is now closed to all vehicles until further notice and on 28 August, another sunken road was spotted just 50 metres away from the sinkhole.
In the Merdeka Eve celebration cancellation announcement, DBKL urged Malaysians to come together to celebrate the meaning of independence with the full spirit of patriotism.
