In less than 2 weeks after its release, John Wick Chapter 4 has already grossed over USD150 million at the box office, which was double the amount of the total box office for the first John Wick. It’s also the 3rd highest-grossing movie in 2023 so far, just behind Creed III and Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania.
John Wick Chapter 4’s ended with a blast, and fans have been wondering if we will ever get another sequel given the ending. In case you’re not caught up with the movie, obviously, major spoilers ahead!
Before we talk about the fate of the sequel, let’s talk about the initial plan. Director Chad Stahelski confirmed that John Wick 4 and 5 were supposed to be shot back to back. However, the Covid-19 pandemic halted the plan when John Wick 4 finished filming in 2021. Not only that, but the initial plan would have required all team members to work for 200 consecutive days, which would be too much for them.
At the end of John Wick 4, the titular character managed to gain his freedom after winning the bid with one of the members of the High Table, Marquis de Gramont, brilliantly played by IT’s Bill Skarsgard. John Wick killed Marquis in the High Table duel, but seemingly succumbed to his wounds after being shot by Caine, a fan-favorite character played by Donnie Yen.
Is John Wick REALLY dead?
As of today, Chad Stahelski has yet to confirm if the titular character played by Keanu Reeves is really 6 feet under. At the end of the film, Winston and the Bowery King stood by John Wick’s grave with his dog, but there were no scenes showing a coffin being buried.
Such an ambiguous ending may leave fans worried about the future of the franchise, but Screen Rant reported that Chad has a promising answer to keep us calm (at the moment).
“As for John Wick, you will never [hear] Keanu or I say, we’re done. We’re proud of what we’ve done, flattered people want to see more, and we want to continue that and will be there to help out.”
What does the studio think?
The Hollywood Reporter reported that Lionsgate Studio is obviously on board with the idea of more John Wick movies as they were the first to suggest a sequel, given the massive success of the film.
“We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee,” said the studio’s President.
Caine’s spinoff
In the meantime, Donnie Yen has also expressed interest in seeing a movie centering around his character, Caine. Some of you may have missed the post-credits scene that shows Caine visiting his daughter with a bouquet of flowers, but not before he was stopped by Akira, who wanted to avenge her father’s death.
However, Donnie Yen said that it is entirely up to the studio.
As of now, John Wick is set to return in Ballerina, a prequel spinoff based on the ballerina that appeared in John Wick 3. The event of the movie takes place between John Wick 3 and 4 and is set to release sometime in 2024. Another prequel series, The Continental focusing on young Winston and Charon will also be released this September on Peacock.
