From food to vacation spots, there is just so much for us to talk about when it comes to the best part of Malaysia. But to hear it from the perspective of a foreigner truly hits differently, and makes us love our homeland even more.
Just yesterday (August 31), popular YouTuber and food vlogger, Rhys William, who hails from the UK posted a short clip on his Instagram account and wished Malaysia’s 65th Independence Day.
Rhys, who is based in our country also briefly recounted how he started to fall in love with Malaysia during his trip a decade ago.
“It was simply a vacation”
Rhys revealed that back in 2012, he visited Malaysia simply for a vacation. However, it was the culture here that ignited his love for the country and turned the vacation into a “lifetime” decision.
“So, in 2013, I decided to move to Malaysia and build a new life here.”
Despite being far from his family who resides in the UK, he has never regretted his decision to (partly) become a Malaysian. Throughout his time in Malaysia, Rhys has learned a lot, including his fluency when conversing in the national language – Bahasa Malaysia.
His YouTube channel, Mat Salleh Cari Makan was born where he captures his journey of hunting for food and the best part is that he speaks the Malay language fluently, just like a native speaker!
Aside from that, his years in Malaysia have also given him the opportunity to drive iconic local cars. He started driving a Proton Wira during his earlier years in the country.
“Not only Wira but I’ve also driven the legendary Viva. With that car, I travelled the whole Peninsular Malaysia.”
Feels just like home
In his Instagram clip, Rhys had a lot to say about his fondness for Malaysia.
Despite coming from the UK, he said that he has never felt like an outsider here as “Malaysians are friendly and caring.”
“Although I’m a Mat Salleh from the UK, Malaysia is still a big part of my life.”
Rhys then ended his clip by thanking Malaysia after wishing the nation its Independence Day, and he did that whilst wearing the traditional “Tanjak” on his head.
Thank you, Rhys, for your love for Malaysia and its people! Fellow Malaysians, what other things in our country are you fond of?
