What if we told you that some Malaysian customers are happily paying RM1,800 for a tray of premium kek lapis?
“Kek Lapis Sultan” is the creation of 38-year-old baker Adhar Brahim, who combines premium ingredients, meticulous techniques, and a lengthy preparation process to produce each cake, a true masterpiece.

“It’s a work of art.”
For Adhar, baking this cake goes beyond fulfilling customer demand. It is an expression of creativity and artistry in the world of Sarawak layered cakes, and he assures that an immense amount of hard work goes into every bake.
“Every layer is made with extreme care to balance texture, flavour, and visual arrangement,” he explained.
“To me, this cake is more than dessert. It’s a work of art in the world of Kek Lapis Sarawak.”

The process is painstaking, taking more than eight hours from mixing the batter to layering and baking each section. As kek lapis is highly sensitive to temperature and baking time, even slight errors can affect the texture or the uniformity of the layers.
To ensure a premium result, Adhar uses high-quality ingredients such as Wijsman butter, imported dried fruits, and carefully selected nuts. The combination creates a richer taste and an intricate, visually appealing texture.
Each tray weighs over five kilograms. While a standard tray is priced at RM1,800, smaller options are also available:
- Half tray: RM910
- Loaf: RM310
- Half loaf: RM160
- Bite-sized pieces: RM9.50

These options allow more customers to experience the cake, while production is limited to 200 trays to maintain exclusivity, according to Harian Metro.
Adhar’s passion is evident in every detail, from the careful selection of ingredients to the precision of layering. He targets cake lovers who appreciate something unique and extraordinary, adding that his greatest reward is seeing customers enjoy the intricate flavours he has crafted with dedication and care.
“Some say I’m trying to get rich quick, but customers understand the quality of my products,” he said.
