“To infinity, and beyond!”
The recent news of the banning of Disney’s Lightyear has certainly upset eager fans who have been waiting for the movie to hit the theatres.
According to Variety, the Malaysian Censorship Board (LPF) decided to NOT release Lightyear in Malaysia due to the scenes involving “homosexual and unnatural sex”, which reportedly features a kissing scene between 2 women.
The LPF has asked for Disney to alter the scenes, to which the latter refused. So, we guess it’s “to infinity and begone” for Lightyear fans in Malaysia.
However, the audience in Malaysia may still be able to catch the movie on the Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform in a couple of months.
Malaysian’s express mixed reactions
The banning of the movie and its possible availability online in the coming months have led to mixed reactions from the Malaysian audience.
“Lightyear movie Malaysia” is currently trending on Facebook and Malaysian audiences have had a lot to say about the announcement of the ban.
Some audiences highlighted the necessity of banning the movie when the Disney+ Hotstar streaming service may pick up the movie in the near future, not to mention the availability of illegal downloads and streaming platforms.
“This is the age of the Internet. Malaysia is a Muslim country, so follow the principle. Just watch it online when it’s available. If porn is available online, why not a cartoon,” questioned a netizen.
Another audience said that it’s pointless to ban the film as it’s just a matter of time before the children are exposed to LGBTQ issues in real life.
One netizen actually questioned why Marvel’s Dr Strange & Eternals was allowed, since both of those movies also have LGBTQ elements in it.
In the meantime, other audiences think that Disney has made a bad move to include the elements of homosexuality in an animation targeted at children.
Audiences who don’t think it’s a wise move to include LGBTQ elements in Lightyear also expressed their satisfaction about the movie being banned in the country.
What do you think of Disney’s decision to include the elements of homosexuality in a movie targeted at children? Will you be watching? Fellow audiences with children, will you be watching with your kids when the movie is available online?
