Malaysian actor Pekin Ibrahim was recently spotted in a Christmas outfit with a Santa hat in a viral video, prompting claims that he participated in a Secret Santa event.
Former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Dato’ Seri Dr Haji Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, clarified that it is forbidden for Muslims to participate in the Secret Santa tradition.
He cited “plunging individuals into the realm of condemnation from the Muslim community” and making it appear “as if the Muslim intends to normalise the celebration of other religions” as reasons behind the prohibition.

In the viral video, Pekin’s wife, Mona Allen, was also seen in a Christmas outfit. But were the couple celebrating the festival at that time?
“We were at a birthday celebration, with NO Secret Santa event.”
Pekin, who admitted to having several non-Muslim relatives, explained that despite the outfit, the gathering was not a Secret Santa event. Speaking to Harian Metro, Pekin said he attended the birthday party of his friend’s child, adding that the Christmas-themed outfit, which resembled pajamas, was worn because the party was only for close friends and relatives.
Pekin also highlighted that there were no gift exchanges—only a game of musical chairs.

The actor said he never planned to film or post anything about the event, but according to him, the maid of the house shared the celebration via a live video. At the same time, Pekin expressed his displeasure that images of his wife without her hijab had circulated online, saying it should not have happened.
“Those who spread the video could be defaming us,” Pekin said.
