Elections are far from over, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of political drama!
If you’re active on social media, you may have come across a number of alleged audio recordings of PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that have been circulating online recently.
The audio clips are allegedly of Anwar making derogatory comments about PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, as he can be heard calling him ‘barua‘ (a lackey or servant) in a conversation with someone who appears to be Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Listen to the clips below!
In light of these clips going viral, Anwar has come out to say that the recordings were not of his voice. He told Malaysiakini,
“I never use such abusive language. No matter how angry I am, I have never used the word ‘barua‘.”
He went on, adding that this was just a political tactic to cause tension within PKR, saying,
“This is not healthy…they (the opposition) should fairly and openly compete with me instead.”
On top of that, Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has also denied that the voice in the audio clips was that of her husband. She was quoted by the Malay Mail as saying,“That’s not true. We heard it and thought, ‘Oh God, whose work is this?’ It is someone’s sinister work. I have asked him (Anwar) and it’s not him, and I also know for sure that is not my husband’s voice.”
In response to the clips, PKR’s communication director, Fahmi Fadzil, stated that there were a number of elements in the audio clips that were not typical of the party’s de facto leader, like his pronunciation. He said,
“The clips are fake and aimed at causing a rift and instilling suspicion among PKR members. The closer we get to the party polls, the more such falsehood is spread.”
“I am confident those clips are fake. The person’s imitation of Anwar is on the same level as that of a college student’s multimedia project.”
“Why are these tactics still being used to taint Anwar’s character? Are they trying to instigate something between Tun Dr Mahathir and Anwar? Are they trying to break up PH (Pakatan Harapan)?”
“If that’s their aim, they should stop it. The rakyat does not believe these old tactics. They (Anwar and Tun Dr Mahathir) have already settled their differences now.”
