Living in a multi-cultural country like Malaysia, it is hardly a surprise to come across more and more individuals who are mixed race. But can some biracial or multiracial people exaggerate about just how “blended” they really are?
Malaysian internet personality Timur Gabriel has made a name for herself with funny clips and TikTok videos of herself through her account @timurgabriel. However, one particular video of hers is garnering widespread attention for a particularly funny reason.
In the clip, Timur imitates how she believes some Malaysians behave when they claim to have Caucasian ancestry, even if it is a minimal amount.
“I know why you’re asking. It’s because I look quite Caucasian right, if I look to this angle a bit,” said Timur in a comedic fashion.
At one point, Timur also says that she has ancestors from the “northern east side of Europe”, and asks people to call her Eurasian.
“My mother’s grandmother’s ex-boyfriend’s father-in-law’s accountant is from Britain, that’s why I look like this,” jested the content creator.
Speaking about the colour of her eyes, Timur also went on to say how, under the sun, her brown eyes are actually hazel, even zooming the camera directly in her face.
Having viewers laughing left, right, and centre, many Malaysians expressed how they have come across people who do the same things Timur was portraying in her video. But in real life, it’s a lot cringier.
“You can’t spell Caucasian without Asian,” joked one user.
Nevertheless, there were also numerous users who, while finding the video entertaining, commented on the real harm that comes from an insistence by Asian individuals to claim a Caucasian heritage when they aren’t or barely have any percentage of that racial composition.
“It happens all over Southeast Asia, I guess. People tend to have an obsession over Eurocentric beauty standards,” wrote another user.
