Indonesia has been named the most generous country in the world for the fifth straight year by Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), a global charitable foundation based in Britain. Revealed in the 2022 edition of the foundation’s annual World Giving Index, the study ranks over 140 countries worldwide using data gathered by Gallup, an American analytics and advisory company.
Aiming to give insight into the scope and nature of giving around the world, the CAF World Giving Index offers a unique glimpse of global trends in generosity and can be viewed here. According to this year’s report, Kenya is ranked second globally, followed by the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
CAF elaborated that Indonesia maintains its top spot in the ranking with an index of 68 per cent, with 8 in 10 people in the country having donated money and 6 in 10 having volunteered their time. As for Kenya, the country scored 61 per cent, with 77 per cent of Kenyans having helped someone they didn’t know compared to the global average of 62 per cent.
Regarding the top 2 countries in the index, CAF said that religion and large religious populations in both nations have been key drivers for increased levels of participation and giving over the past 5 years. Furthermore, the results may also be driven by community-focused cultural traditions such as Indonesia’s ‘gotong-royong’ culture and Kenya’s ‘harambee’ practice. CAF said that both practices help unite people in times of increased need such as during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As for Malaysia, we were ranked 29th in 2021, though we are left without a ranking this year as our country was not part of the nations surveyed for the index. So, what do you guys think of the findings of the CAF research? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
