At this point in time, many of those who have been afflicted by the current Covid-19 outbreak across the world are elderly people with an already compromised immune system, rendering them particularly vulnerable to this highly infectious disease. As a result, they have to be warded in Intensive Care Units in order to ensure that their condition doesn’t worsen.
But given the nature of the virus and the regulations of most hospitals, the elderly are often segregated from their family, given the risks involved.
However, for one elderly couple who both were warded in ICU for Covid-19, they were given the rare chance of sharing one of the sweetest moments in their long-standing marriage, according to nurse Roberta Ferretti, who worked in the unit.
The couple, Sandra, 71, and her husband Giancarlo, 73, were both warded in at a hospital in Marche, after they both tested positive for Covid-19. Upon being warded, they were both put in separate beds and had ventilators strapped over their faces to assist in breathing.
However, when reanimation nurse Roberta Ferretti caught wind that the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary would be coming up soon, she decided to throw them a surprise.
With the help of medical officers in the ward, they organised a small 10-minute party for the elderly couple to commemorate the occasion, going so far as to bring a small cake and making heart-shaped gestures with their hands while in full PPE!
The elderly couple mustered enough strength to hold on to each other’s hand throughout the little party, elated with the kind efforts that their medical team have taken upon to help them celebrate the occasion. That’s so sweet!
“It was an amazing moment, very beautiful, those minutes alone pay us for all the sacrifice we have made these days. He kept repeating how much he loves her, we broke into tears. In the air, you could feel the love you chase your whole life.” said Roberta.
We hope that the couple will be able to recover from Covid-19 and see another year of anniversary celebrations the year after this, and thank the frontline medical officers for giving them even just a glimmer of happiness during this bleak time!
