Trigger warning: This article mentions suicide.
Just 2 days ago, the entertainment industry was shocked by the news of the death of Lee Sun-Kyun, a South Korean actor who was found dead in his car after committing suicide. Lee was notably known for his role in the award-winning movie, Parasite.
The police discovered evidence of lit charcoal briquettes inside Lee’s car, indicating that his death might have been a suicide. His demise was a huge shock not only to the industry but also to many fans around the world, but the content of his suicide note was even more heartbreaking.
On the same day, his suicide note to his wife, Jeon Hye Jin was revealed by the news. It was brief but the words were more than sufficient to show that Lee felt lost and couldn’t find another way out.
“I can’t do anything. I think this is the only way.”
According to the report by Korean ENT, the actor apologised to the representative of his agency and wrote “I’m sorry” while mentioning the financial burden of advertising and film penalties, which were incurred owing to the alleged drug probe. Lee reportedly had to pay a 10 billion won fine for violation of contracts with partners.
Before his demise, Lee had gone through multiple police interrogations involving drug use which allegedly took place at the residence of a hostess. Lee, however, denied the allegations and said that he thought the substance was a sleeping pill, reported The India Times.
Lee also claimed that he was tricked by the woman into taking the drugs and that he did not know what he was consuming. In November, he tested negative in 2 drug tests conducted by the police.
His funeral was held privately at the Seoul National University Hospital, with only family members and close acquaintances attending.
On the morning of 27th December, Hye Jin made a distress call to the police to report her husband’s disappearance before his body was found in his car.
Our thoughts and prayers go to the family of Lee Sun-Kyun.
