They say honest work is always the best way to earn a living, and a 20-year-old Malaysian graduate with a Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) is living proof of that.
Instead of following the typical path, he’s charting his own course, earning a living by working at a palm oil plantation in Tapah, Perak.

He makes RM7k a month
Muhammad Hazim Mohd. Akhir brings in as much as RM7,000 a month by overseeing a 16-hectare oil palm plantation that belongs to his family, in addition to some leased land.
In an interview with Kosmo, he explained how it all started when he was 12. Inspired by his dad, he became curious and developed an interest in the work, eventually helping him out.
He also mentioned that his dad is always hands-on with farm management, overseeing everything from spraying pesticides and fertilising to harvesting fruit and processing it at the mill with the help of 2 workers.
“I save most of my salary to buy more land and expand the oil palm plantation. Right now, I’m putting my plans for a luxury car or high-tech gadgets on hold,” Hazim added.

“Let that money go towards building assets”
Hazim shared that his dad also grows oil palm seedlings for replanting areas where the crops are no longer profitable.
“Some people say agriculture is dirty, dangerous, and tough, but if you plan right, it’s not as bad as it sounds,” he said.
He mentioned that palm oil prices range from RM890 to RM950 per ton, and with good pest control, it provides a steady income all year long.
In addition to growing oil palm trees, he also plants bananas, bamboo, and pineapples and raises livestock.
“Let that money go towards building assets. I want to own a home and land before I get married.”
