Learning an extra language or 2 is definitely a plus, not just in social conversations but also for job opportunities!
It’s common for some people to learn extra languages nowadays but the reasons may vary. Recently, local singer and host, Khairil Azam Pilus revealed a heartwarming note which his son wrote in Chinese.
The note reads, “Dear daddy & mummy, I love you. I will study hard and repay both of you.”
The simple yet touching note sent Khairil into tears and his Instagram post about the note has also touched the hearts of many Malaysians.
Job opportunities & social conversation
Knowing of the perks that learning an extra language in this multi-racial country brings about, Khairil decided to send his son to Chinese school after discussing with his wife the benefits.
“Mastering English and Malay will land you a job easier. But to have master the Chinese language as well, I think it will land our son more job opportunities in the future.”
In an interview with Sin Chew, Khairil said the extra language will not only help his son in terms of job opportunities but also in terms of social conversation, especially when it comes to mingling around with peers of different races.
“It will expose them to different cultures which will make them more open-minded.”
Neighbour to the rescue
As Khairil and his wife never learned Chinese, who would be there to guide their son?
Coincidentally, their Indian neighbours who speak 4 languages has helped Khairil and his wife to guide their son when needed.
“My neighbour speaks Tamil, Chinese, English & Malay. So we thought if other races are learning Chinese, why can’t we?”

As the world slowly recovers from the pandemic, job opportunities will naturally come around and in this competitive time, the ability to speak more languages is certainly a big help, not to mention how it also illustrates the Keluarga Malaysia spirit!
