Following the commencement of the Chinese New Year, plenty of well known figures have taken to social media to commemorate the occasion with videos of their well wishes.
In her Chinese New Year greeting video, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh decided to make it a little more unique by trying her best to do it in Mandarin, a language which she says she is not exactly fluent in.
In the video, Yeoh starts off by wishing her followers a happy Chinese New Year in Bahasa Malaysia. She reminded the public to appreciate the time with their families and not to just spend time on the phone.
After she had done her well wishes in BM, she went on to do it in Mandarin. Although it all appeared to be smooth, the outtakes pointed out how much she struggled with it in Mandarin.
In the caption of the video, Yeoh wrote, “Hanayo is trying to learn Mandarin, I try. I can speak BM, English and Cantonese, (but) find Mandarin very challenging, but every CNY I will try to greet you in Mandarin.”
She told her followers to retweet her wish video if her intonation is good.
Good try!
The video has since gone viral and sits on over 104,200 views on Twitter alone. Plenty of netizens loved the fact that she tried to do it in Mandarin despite struggling.
“It’s like when you practiced to act in Mandarin during degree times.”
“Not exactly right. Almost there,” said another user.
Other users suggested that she just do it in a language that she is comfortable with.
