A motorcycle event that took place in Kuantan, Pahang, has left netizens divided over multiple reasons.
With an estimated 40,000 participants biking into Kuantan on their RX-Z motorcycles for a 2-day affair, many celebrated the event and its affect on the local economy while others questioned the kind of example it sets for the younger generation while pointing out how the law seemed to be overlooked.
Pahang State Communications and Multimedia, Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal took to his Facebook page to share a post on how proud he was over the success of the RXZ Fighter Gathering Kuantan 2024 event.
He wrote, “You guys are truly Fighters! The RXZ Fighter @Kuantan event created an insanely high rate of first-time participation in history. Kuantan was lit!”
The event, which took place on Friday (March 1) to Saturday (March 2), boasted a series of activities which included a convoy ride, tournaments among the participants, religious forums and even a road safety talk by the Kuantan Chief of Police.
A weekend of freedom from the law?
Many celebrated the event as it boosted the local economy through participants renting homestays and purchasing food from small vendors and restaurants.
They also praised the fact that the riders were not faced with action against their motorcycle modifications, especially considering the fact that these modifications are against the law.
“A lot of cash flow happened. May all the vendors and buyers receive the same benefits.”
“All the restaurants were full packed last night. The best!”
“Kuantan is great! Clearly no ‘catching’ activities.”
“Kuantan is the best. (The event) took place smoothly with no ‘catching’ disturbances. Like this only fun!”
More bad than good?
Others pointed out that the influx of motorcycles caused disturbances on the roads, and their modified exhausts caused noise and smoke pollution.
They also questioned why the clearly illegal exhaust modifications to the motorcycles were overlooked by the authorities.
“What is the benefit of this event? When I was on my way to KL from Kuantan, throughout the journey I saw many flying past me on motorcycles. One group after another group. They don’t care for their lives.”
“Sorry but Kuantan was not lit, but Kuantan was hazy and noisy.”
“It’s weird, why were there no ‘catching’ activities?”
“There were no ‘catching’ activities? I saw many of these RX-Z exhausts that clearly failed to comply with the authorities’ standards. Oh my country, it’s true what the late P Ramlee said in the Musang Berjanggut movie, I remember the dialogue ‘we make the law‘.”
A Kuantan resident, who chose to remain anonymous, shared with WORLD OF BUZZ that the participants of the event rode around town and neighbourhoods in large groups.
“We could hear them from our homes, coming and going through the neighbourhood as their exhausts were so loud and they left behind clouds of exhaust smoke that were difficult to bear,” she shared.
With that being said, it is also important to point out that 2 participants have died while 2 more have been left severely injured in accidents.
While it is understandable that the participants brought great economical outcomes to the many whose businesses boomed during the event, it appears that the cons may outweigh the pros.
