A Malaysian tourist, and 9 police officers and defence volunteers were injured when a homemade bomb hidden on a motorcycle parked near a police station in Muang district, Pattani exploded yesterday morning (January 13).
According to a report by Malaysia Gazette, the Thai authorities shared that the incident took place at about 8.20am, and the bomb was detonated using a timing device.
The Malaysian tourist, who has since been identified, complained of chest pains but did not sustain physical injuries. Most of the other victims, too, suffered from chest pain.
However, 3 of the defence volunteers were injured by shrapnel.
A bomb disposal team was deployed to the scene and police have since cordoned off the area, including cutting off telecommunications signals due to concerns that there may be a second bomb.
It is believed that the bomb was planted by separatist insurgents from Southern Thailand, who primarily use walkie-talkie signals, timing devices or mobile phones to detonate bombs.
