When traveling overseas, we can hardly hear spoken Bahasa Melayu, except from fellow Malaysians. What if we hear spoken BM from a foreigner?
Not long ago, Hong Kong actor Philip Keung said that he’s a huge fan of Malaysia, especially Penang, and that he already has plans to celebrate CNY in the state next time. Philip has been staying in Malaysia since December 2022, and recently, he attended a premier night for the media at a cinema in KL to promote his movie, Shadows, which is currently showing in cinemas.
A group of local YouTubers, Dissy was also present during the premiere night, and they took this one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to film a scripted video with Philip, where he said a sentence in BM.
In the short clip, K Lao & Dai Hee from Dissy asked Philip in BM about the direction to the theater hall. If you look at the video, both of them were struggling to convey their message in BM. Philip then responded,
“You cakap apa? (What are you saying?)”
K Lao and Dai Hee talked to each other in Cantonese, to which Philip also responded in the same language. He then directed the duo in the right direction and told them, “It’s a good movie!”
Back in 2019, Philip said that he bought a house in Malaysia just to relax when he’s tired from work in Hong Kong. Since then, he has been traveling to both countries, although he is mainly based in Hong Kong. Given the time that he has spent in Hong Kong, it’s not surprising to hear Philip saying a sentence or 2 in BM with accurate pronunciation.
Many Malaysians thought the same after watching Dissy’s short clip.
“My god, his BM’s pronunciation is so accurate.”
“That’s an accurate pronunciation of BM.”
“His BM is so good!”
“His BM is getting good after staying in Malaysia for quite some time.”
“Wow, not bad that he’s able to say that!”
“Black Gor’s BM is quite accurate! That’s what he gets after staying in Malaysia for a long time. Smart!”
You can watch the clip below.
Have you caught up with Philip’s latest movie? In the meantime, what do you think of his BM?
