Famous Hong Kong restaurant The Chairman, a 1-Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant has taken to social media to clarify that it has no branch, franchise or any other form of operation in or outside of Hong Kong.

This is after a large billboard with The Chairman’s identical name and logo was erected at a new luxury mall in Kuala Lumpur.

In an Instagram post, The Chairman stressed that it doesn’t have any operation in Malaysia and does not have any association with the restaurant at the Kuala Lumpur mall.

Furthermore, the restaurant asserted that it has not authorised or approved any person or entity in or outside of Hong Kong to use any of its English or Chinese names and/or any of its logos and related designs.

However, the renowned restaurant does not have legal standing to challenge the use of the name and logo by the Kuala Lumpur mall as trademark infringement laws are territory-based.

Earlier this week, social media users were excited at the prospect of Hong Kong’s The Chairman restaurant opening in Kuala Lumpur, which means that patrons don’t have to travel far to taste the dishes offered by the 1-Michelin-star restaurant.

Unfortunately, this is not the case as the restaurant opening soon at the new Kuala Lumpur mall is a completely different entity.

The operator of the Malaysian restaurant has since released a statement regarding the confusion, clarifying that it has no affiliation with the famous Hong Kong restaurant.

However, there is some good news though as Mr Chan, one of the Hong Kong restaurant’s founders and advisor to the Malaysian restaurant will be introducing a new establishment in Malaysia soon, though it is unknown whether this has anything affiliated with The Chairman Hong Kong too.

So, what do you guys think of the whole situation? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
