Traveling in a foreign country can be scary, especially when you find yourself in an unfamiliar environment without any familiar faces.
User @TravelJimat recently shared an incident involving a group which traveled to Iceland on X (Formerly referred to as Twitter).
It was shared that a group of Malaysians made a short trip to Iceland from the 21st of November 2023 to the 25th of November 2023. Their trip went smoothly until the last day they were there.
Afiqah, the sister, mentioned that on their final day in Iceland, her brother experienced a seizure for the first time in his life. She emphasized that he had never had a seizure before. Additionally, she shared that he had two seizures within less than an hour.
The situation became distressing as they didn’t know whom to call for help, given that they were unfamiliar with anyone in the area.
“The guesthouse owner called an ambulance, and my brother was admitted to Landspitali – The National University Hospital of Iceland for a day, sometime between 1:00 am and 5:30 pm.”
She mentioned they decided to get travel insurance and extended their stay in Iceland by a day. She also provided a breakdown of their hospital expenses; her brother’s amounted to over RM6,000, and hers was around RM2,600.
“It’s true what they say about needing emergency money when you travel. Credit cards can be quite handy in situations like this.”
Afiqah mentioned that although her brother had no history of seizures, it happened because his body temperature dropped suddenly. He had been sitting outside the guesthouse for two hours, waiting for the aurora.
She also explained that the reason she was admitted was because she had injured both her hands while trying to help her brother.
Afiqah shared that the total additional expenses, including the hospital bill, were approximately RM13,000, which didn’t include taxi, food, and other costs.
The thread was wrapped up with an update on her brother’s current condition.
