Recently, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced that PLUS Expressway Berhad will be adding 12 more Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology lanes by mid-April 2023 in order to circumvent congestion.
The decision was reached at a meeting between Nanta and representatives from Touch ‘n Go Malaysia, Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and PLUS Malaysia yesterday (13 January 2023).
According to BERNAMA, the decision was made based on complaints received from highway users asserting that a lack of RFID lanes is causing congestion at toll plazas.
In case you didn’t know, the RFID system uses a radio frequency chip contained in a sticker affixed to a vehicle and has been touted to replace the role of a smart tag device (SmartTAG).
In relation to that, LLM in a statement advised highway users to ensure that their e-wallet balance for the use of RFID lanes is sufficient and to ensure the selection of lanes that use the same payment method mode when entering and exiting toll plazas.
LLM also revealed the list of toll plazas that will be getting the additional RFID lanes, which is as per below:
- PLUS Sg. Besi (Entry Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Jalan Duta (Entry Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Shah Alam (Entry Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Sungai Buloh (Entry Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Rawang Selatan (Entry Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Setia Alam (Exit Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Setia Alam (Entry Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Subang (Entry Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Putra Mahkota (Entry Toll Plaza)
- PLUS Kajang (Entry Toll Plaza)
- Penang Bridge Toll Plaza
- Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE) Kubang Semang
Besides that, the Works Minister also revealed that he has since ordered action to be taken as soon as possible in regard to the safety issues brought up by highway users due to the position of RFID lanes in the changing toll booth which has caused accidents. Resolving the issue is a priority so as to ensure the safety of all parties.
