Monsoon season has just begun, and with the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s prediction that this year’s season will last all the way until March 2018, it’s understandable that everyone is concerned.
Now, on top of floods and bad traffic, it looks like some prices of common grocery items may increase due to the heavy rain!
According to the Malay Mail, the imminent price hikes are due to lower yields because of the rain. Local fisherman associations and farmers in Cameron Highlands have reportedly claimed that the heavy rain and floods have affected the amount of fish caught and vegetables harvested.
Jeanne Khor, Secretary of the Pantai Remis Fisherman Association, added that the heavy rain could cut fishermen’s catch by as much as 50 to 60 per cent!
Meanwhile, as for vegetables, Cameron Highlands Malay Farmers Association chairman Syed Abdul Rahman predicted a 20 to 25 per cent drop in harvests during the monsoon season.
Here are some of the common produce that will likely be affected by the price hike;
- Mackerel (increased to RM10 per kg)
- Sardines (increased to RM4-RM7)
- Tomatoes (increased from RM3 to RM4 per kg)
- Cabbages (increased from RM1.20 to RM2)
So, take note of these price hikes! Hopefully the rainy season won’t go on for as long as what was predicted!
