In the twilight years of life, retirement should signify a mark to the beginning of an exciting new chapter in life, filled with opportunities for leisure, social engagement, and active living. In Malaysia, the retirement landscape is evolving, offering diverse and dynamic options for seniors. As we delve into this transformative stage of life, we must emphasise the vital importance of cognitive health and mental well-being.

Recent statistics show that retirement is undergoing a significant shift in Malaysia. Senior living residences have emerged as a modern retirement plan of choice, offering a fulfilling and engaging lifestyle. But why is cognitive health and mental well-being so crucial in one’s retirement years?

1. Creativity knows no age limits Seniors express themselves through art promoting mental stimulation and emotional well being

“Cognitive health is the cornerstone of independence, emotional stability, and a sense of self-worth in our golden years. It improves our quality of life, emotional stability, and even financial independence,” said Dr Ericson Chia, Health and Wellness Advisor at Sunway Sanctuary. Retirees who engage in regular social interaction can prevent or delay cognitive decline, improve emotional support, enhance memory, and improve physical health.

Physical activity is another key element for maintaining positive cognitive health during retirement. Dr Ericson underlines that neglecting cognitive health leads to a host of health and psychological problems. The risk of dementia, depression, and anxiety increases, potentially resulting in medication mismanagement and emotional stress for seniors and their caregivers.

2. Residents in senior living communities able to engage in daily physical exercises fostering social bonds and embracing the joy of active retirement living. jpg

He continues, “Studies have shown that regular exercise can reduce the risk of developing dementia by up to 30%. It enhances neuroplasticity, memory, executive function, and mood regulation. Seniors aged 65 or older should aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity activities.”

Mental stimulation through brain-training exercises, such as board games, puzzles, painting, and cognitive games, can enhance memory, attention, critical thinking, and emotional regulation. Additionally, fostering and nurturing social interaction amongst the elderly in a community can contribute to cognitive vitality and overall quality of life.

Cognitive health and mental well-being are intrinsically linked. Seniors with good cognitive function are more self-reliant, enjoy improved emotional stability, and maintain their independence for longer periods, resulting in enhanced self-worth, said Dr Ericson Chia.

At Sunway Sanctuary, residents kick off their day with a wholesome and delicious breakfast, followed by engaging in daily physical exercise. Subsequently, various group and individual activities are available for their participation, ranging from art classes and board games to swimming and karaoke.
