If you are like me, the recent evening thunderstorms are something you look forward to, all except for the horrendous traffic they bring, of course.

However, we might have to say goodbye to the rain as the weather is going to turn hot and dry thanks to the onset of the southwest monsoon. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the southwest monsoon will begin tomorrow (6 May) and is expected to last till September.

MetMalaysia’s director-general Datuk Alui Bahari explained, as quoted by The Star, that the climate would be drier as there is less rain cloud formation caused by changing wind patterns during the southwest monsoon period.

This would cause heatwaves and dry spells to occur throughout the country. States like Johor, Melaka, Terengganu, Pahang, Kelantan would be receiving slightly less than average rainfall.

Alui also mentioned that El Nino has a 65% chance of happening until August based on several global climate models. This could drive the temperatures in the region up even higher.

Malaysians have experienced heatwaves and dry spells before, and some of us are even oblivious when they’re happening. However, it is better for us to prepare ourselves to face the weather. Stay hydrated, stay indoors and wear some sunscreen to protect your skin.
