A huge fight broke out between 2 groups of men at a restaurant in Palm Square, Papar, Sabah, allegedly due to a restaurant owner’s name being called in a rude manner.
According to a report by Berita Harian, the incident, which took place on Monday (June 23) at about 1pm, became increasingly uncontrollable until a riot broke out, with sticks and chairs being thrown. It is understood that all the suspects later surrendered to the police before being detained for further investigations.
The Papar District Police Chief, Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka, shared that the 9 men who were detained to assist in investigations into the fight and riot are aged 19 to 50. He then explained that the incident is believed to have started due to a misunderstanding when one of the suspects allegedly called the restaurant owner’s name in a rude tone.

“They were said to be dissatisfied, and a verbal altercation occurred between the 2 groups in a rude tone. The tense situation became uncontrollable until a fight broke out between the 2 parties using restaurant chairs and sticks as weapons,” he said.
Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka added that the fight was later broken up by members of the public at the location.
Investigations into this case are being carried out under Section 148 and Section 60 of the Penal Code, which are for rioting and fighting in a public place.
“Members of the public who have information regarding the case are asked to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Mazlan Mali, via 013-6564978 or come to any nearby police station to assist in the investigation. In addition, the public is also advised not to speculate regarding the incident,” he said.
