The Ministry of Health (MOH) has taken note of the issue in regards to the recalling of Jif peanut butter products in the US market due to fear of contamination with Salmonella bacteria through a notification received from the International Food Safety Authorities Networks (INFOSAN).
Health director-general, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah took to his Facebook page to share that the Food and Drug Administration, United States (USFDA) has ordered Jif peanut butter products, with batch numbers between 1274425 to 2140425 which only involves the last 3 digits of 425, to be withdrawn because of Salmonella bacteria contamination.
He wrote, “The peanut butter products have been distributed to several countries such as Canada, Thailand, Honduras, Spain, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.”
“Through MOH’s review of the Food Safety Information System of Malaysia (FoSIM) data, it was confirmed that the Jif peanut butter products have been imported into the country. In this regard, MOH has asked the importing companies to withdraw the products involved from the market.”
He has since urged all sellers to stop the sales of the products involved with the above mentioned batch numbers and customers who have purchased the products with the batch numbers are asked not to consume it.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning when present in foods such as meat, poultry, eggs, fruits, vegetables and processed foods, if hygiene aspects are neglected or if the food is not processed properly.
