The famous asam laksa hawker in Air Itam, Penang, affectionately known as Uncle Seong, sadly passed away yesterday (2 April), leaving a gaping hole in the Malaysian culinary community.
Air Itam assemblyman, Joseph Ng Soon Siang, took to his Facebook page to share the devastating news.

He wrote:
“A loss of another Air Itam gem, Uncle Seong, the man behind the famous Air Itam Laksa. Deepest condolences to the Ang family on the loss of their beloved father.
“He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. We will miss the sight of him standing in front of his stall, serving hot and delicious laksa to customers.”
An Anthony Bourdain favourite

Uncle Seong famously appeared in an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, where the late chef described the asam laksa as both hearty and spicy.
“Look at that magical broth they’ve got simmering away over there,” Bourdain remarked, referring to the signature pot of broth that drew crowds from across the globe.

Our sincerest condolences to Uncle Seong’s family and loved ones.
