A Malaysian woman who wanted to apply for annual leave couldn’t get peace of mind when her employer’s pending approval came with a condition.
She claimed that her boss would need her to turn on her live location while she was away to make sure that she was indeed, away for holiday.

In her viral Threads post, which is now inaccessible, the Malaysian woman sought advice from social media users and wanted to find out if it was a regular practice for employers to ask for the live location of an employee who is off duty or away for a holiday.

An HR rep responds
Before we get into netizens’ thoughts, according to a viral TikTok video response by a woman who works in the HR industry, she clarified that an employer does not have the right to ask for an employee’s live location when he or she is on annual leave.
“You don’t even need to ask for reasons why an employee is away because every employee is entitled to annual leave.”
“However, when the annual leave is applied at the 11th hour, and there are deadlines to meet but the employee needs to send their parents to clinic, the employer might ask the staff for a live location to prove that they are indeed at the clinic.”

As for the social media users, many were baffled by the employer’s request, with one of them calling the boss “a micromanager and psychopathic.”

“Leave the company and find something else.”
“This is a breach of privacy. Report to your HR, if not, bring the matter to the labour department.”
“Please throw the Labour Act in his face.”
“This is micromanaging at its best. Something is fishy. You’re entitled to annual leave and the company does not need to know where you’re going.”
“This is not common. It’s time for you to hand in your resignation letter.”
