Mayday! Mayday!

If you’re thinking of cooking up some venison dishes for your hungry guests this Raya season, pay heed to this warning first!

That’s because you ought to be vigilant when grocery shopping as Berita Harian reported that there are offers circulating on social media whereby venison meat is being sold at RM35 per kilogram – however, this is a scam. Oh dear!

Nor Azhar Mohd Nor, Chairman of PePeRZU (Persatuan Penternak Rusa Zon Utara) said that it’s impossible for local or imported venison to be sold at such an affordable price.

“A deer that weighs more than 30kg costs more than RM2,000 to be reared. So, its meat and bones will be sold for RM70 per kg, which is the market price.”

“Therefore, if its meat is sold at RM35, this means it only takes RM1,050 to rear one deer. In other words, they don’t make any profit at all!” explained Azhar.

True!

He then added that the meat being promoted on social media cannot be acquired in bulk, as claimed by the seller. This is because no one in Malaysia has a huge deer farm that is enough to supply venison in bulk.

Further solidifying his claim, Azhar revealed that there are only approximately 15,000 deer reared all over Malaysia including the ones reared by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).

He continued,

“Not only that, countries like Australia and New Zealand have strict procedures when exporting venison to Malaysia, so imported venison will normally cost RM50 per kg. Also, Indonesia doesn’t export venison to us anymore.”

“We suspect that this meat is buffalo meat and we hope that consumers don’t fall for this ploy. In fact, we believe that the person selling the meat may have been cheated by their supplier too.”

“Besides, beef is sold for RM34 per kg meanwhile mutton is sold for RM30 per kg, so it’s impossible that you could get venison for RM35 per kg,” he finally said.

You heard him, it’s impossible to buy venison that cheap!

Therefore, be careful if you intend on buying venison this time around. To be safe, do make it a habit to check the market price of the meat you’re buying to avoid getting scammed So, check before you buy, guys!
