Some Malaysians prefer to bring their own seafood or poultry to restaurants so that the chef there can cook it for them. Most of the time, this will cost less while we can enjoy fresher food.

This was not the case for a group of 30 people who went to a Kuantan restaurant and were charged RM1,286 even when they brought their own seafood!

This group of people were so surprised by the amount on the receipt that they took to Facebook to share their story.

There was a total of 26 people in that group and they were separated into three tables. They brought fishes and prawns to be cooked by the restaurant.

After eating, they were presented with a bill of RM1,286. Here is the itemised bill:

Dish Quantity Price per unit (RM) Sum (RM)
Vegetables 3 45 135
Beer 16 17 272
Charges for steaming fish 3 60 180
Charges for cooking two types of prawns 3 100 300
100 Plus 10 unknown unknown
Herbal Tea 10 unknown unknown
Rice (small) 26 unknown unknown

Grand total

1,286

The unknown amount adds up to RM399 and the customers were quite confused as to where it came from. They called the restaurant again and got the itemised bill. When they got to the last RM399, they explicitly confirmed with the boss several times that the rice and drinks were RM399 altogether.

After the post went viral, many people said that the group of 26 should have asked for the price of everything before ordering. Some said that there were taxes in the RM399.

Chinese media such as Sinchew Daily and China Press have reached out to the restaurant but they refused to give a statement.
