It’s that time of year again to balik kampung and berRaya-Raya~ Aside from aunties asking us when we getting married and loooooong traffic jams, the one thing we know that will never change, is that we’ll always be spoiled with a HUGE selection of kuih raya!
In conjunction with Raya this year, we wondered: how would Malaysians rate each kuih raya? So, we did our research, and ranked some of the most popular kuih raya from downright awful to “Sedap wei!”.
There are some pretty savage comments, so continue reading at your own risk ya? ?
10. Biskut mazola: NUT really the best lah
Though it’s a traditional kuih as old as time, biskut mazola is actually the most unpopular kuih raya among Malaysians! Surprising lah, considering its yummy-sounding recipe.
- “It tastes like someone chew the kacang for you, spit it out kepal-kepal, then let you eat.” ?? Wani
- “Something about the nutty and flour-y combo that just doesn’t hit the spot for me.” ? Hanif
Of course, there are a few Malaysians who seem to like biskut mazola. We don’t judge lah no cap, as long as they enjoy it~
- “Depends on the recipe lah, I only like those with a little bit of salt.” Evelyn
- “Cair di mulut!” (“It melts in your mouth!”) ? Azizah
9. Kuih bangkit: Mouth-melting, though a little dry
This SUPER traditional fragrant coconut cookie is a favourite among older folks, but it’s also one of the more disliked kuih raya. Check out these scathing no-chill opinions! ?
- “SO BLAND! WHY EAT CHALK???” Faris
- “It’s SOOOOO DRYYYY! I can’t even swallow it!” Evelyn
Nowwww, why do some people actually like kuih bangkit then? They got their own valid reasons~
- “Cair di mulut lorh! (“It melts in your mouth!”) Azizah
- “I only like the modern ones, like bangkit cheese.” Liyana
8. Tart nenas (Pineapple tart): Love/hate balik kampung pineapple jam
Every Malaysian is confirm familiar with the classic snack of tart nenas, and this got a better reception than the previous two – not without its flaws lah.
- “A must-have classic! Raya is not Raya without this.” Fatin
- “The sourness is yikes! How could a pineapple dessert be more sour than the fruit itself?” Evelyn
- “It’s sedap, tapi depend on rasa nenas tu lah; don’t really like it too sweet.” Sonia
7. Almond London: Atas nutty chocolate
Opinions vary greatly on this melted chocolate almond goodness, but basically, it’s the almond-chocolate ratio and chocolate quality that makes or breaks it ah!
- “I’m a chocolate kinda guy but it depends on whether the almond overpowers the chocolate or not.” Hanif
- “Name only fancy, it’s never nice. Tastes like fake chocolate, huhu!” Sonia
- “It’s chocolate biscuit, period. Simple and nostalgic~” Saiful
6. Kuih ros: For those who live for the crunch
This deep-fried delicacy is simply heaven for those who like their snacks with an extra crunch! However, its utter simplicity of flour, oil and sugar also turns off those who want more “complex” flavours.
- “It tastes sweet, but kind of plain so it doesn’t stand out for me.” Fatin
- “My all-time fave!!! So good, especially the ones that don’t break so easily.” Hannah
- “A bit oily compared to most other kuih raya, so it’s a mid snack for me.” Hanif
5. Popia simpul: Smol, but dangerously addictive
These little bundles of joy may not seem like much, but it’s the explosion of fish or dried shrimp floss in your mouth that’ll make it impossible to stop snacking on!
- “I prefer the pedas ones. Will definitely layan snacking them when otw balik kampung!” Harith
- “What is this? Spring rolls for ants?” Jun Wei
- “Savoury filling in tiny bite-sized popias – VERY addictive.” Fatin
4. Kerepek bawang: Tear up at how surprisingly SEDAP this is
These Swiss-roll-like onion chips taste almost nothing like onions, more like fragrant potato chips tbh, but that doesn’t stop it from being a top 4 kuih raya!
- “Hate onions, but this is SO GOOD!” Hannah
- “So fragrant, so crunchy. Only downside is I can’t hear people talking when chewing.” Evelyn
- “Giving me that onion breath to shoo away busybody mak ciks. LOVE!” Faris
3. Semperit: The superior butter cookie!
Named after the description of its batter being piped out, it’s no surprise this Malaysian butter cookie is a crowd favourite. Take care to not stuff yourself until you choke on the cherry ya?
- “THE BEST KUIH RAYA TO EVER EXIST! MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH…” Jun Wei
- “LURVE! 10/10 would choke on this too – livin’ for that red thing in the middle.” Alissa
- “Classic! If you know that aunty’s cooking is bad, go for the safest choice: semperit.” Wani
2. Kerepek pisang: Banana chips to die for
Love pisang goreng but want it crunchy forever-ish? You can’t go wrong with pisang kerepek! Confirm you’ll see this at EVERY family/friend house you visit every Raya.
- “So crunchy, and it’s sweet! It’s a fruit so mayyybe it’s healthier?” Evelyn
- “Love this, especially pisang tanduk (plantain)!” Sonia
- “A nice break from all the sweet cookies. Salty, sweet and crunchy, SO addictive to eat!” Fatin
1. Cornflakes madu: The king of kuih raya!
And finally, we crown cornflakes madu as THE top favourite kuih raya among Malaysians! After all, who wouldn’t love the heavenly combination of honey, cornflakes and butter?
- “LOVE CORNFLAKES! And with HONEY??? PERFECTION!” Meghan
- “Well-liked by literally EVERYONE, from my grandparents to my baby nieces/nephews.” Fatin
- “You don’t like, you saiko.” Wani
- “Satu bekas will habis in a day.” Syazwan
What do YOU think of these rankings? ? Then again, no matter your or anyone else’s opinion, everyone has different tastes so to each their own~ After all, every kuih raya is special in its own uniquely delicious way, especially when they’re homemade!
