Remember when we were seven and our teacher asked us, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Were you the type to have all your paths figured out? Or were you one of those who had no idea and just went with life as it flowed? Well, we got news for you. The progression of technology has done at least one thing right: creating various jobs that we never even dared to dream about 10 years ago!

Gone are the days where athletes or celebrities are topping the highest-paid income list. These days, you can make as much money as them just by being on the internet!

1. Youtuber

Monthly earnings: RM8,000 – RM6,000,000
Job description: A Youtuber is a content creator who curates videos and publishes their content on the video-sharing website, Youtube.

In very simple terms, they make videos of themselves, uploads them to Youtube and get paid when people watch their videos or click on ads. Think this sounds pretty ridiculous? Then, you won’t believe the numbers that these Youtubers earn monthly.

Indonesia’s very own Atta Halilintar was named Southeast Asia’s first YouTuber to reach 10 million subscribers in 2019, and to date, he has over 20 million subscribers. Because of this, he has earned a place in the top 10 highest paid Youtubers in the world, with a reported earning of over RM6,000,000 every month from ads and selling merchandise. Walao, goes to show the true power of the internet.

2. E-Sports Players

Monthly earnings: RM3,000 – RM150,000
Job description: An e-sports player is a professional gamer who would partake in e-sports tournaments that are carried out in cyber cafes, even stadiums. These players would often compete in a group with other teammates. 

These e-sports competitions are held across the globe for months per season and the top professional gamers in the industry have been known to take home an income worth millions of dollars. 

One of the highest-paid e-sports players in Southeast Asia is Malaysia’s homegrown Jianwei Yap, a DoTA player who is also known as xNova in the gaming industry. Jianwei has reportedly bagged over $1 million USD in 2018 alone, as a result of winning various prestigious e-sports tournaments. 

3. Mobile App Developer

Monthly earnings: RM5,800 – RM8,000
Job description: A mobile app developer specialises in developing software & mobile applications using a programming language. They are also in charge of maintaining the apps to ensure that it runs smoothly on users’ mobile phones. 

These days, we rely on our smartphones to carry out almost every single one of our daily routines; thanks to the various applications that are available on our phones. Because of this, mobile app development companies have been sprouting up like mushrooms all over Southeast Asia. If you’ve ever thought of a genius idea for an app, it might not be such a bad idea to develop it considering the many developer-turn-millionaire stories we’ve heard of before.

4. Social Media Marketer

Monthly earnings: RM4,000 – RM12,000
Job description: A social media marketer is someone who manages all of the social media presence of a company, including planning out the posts and content of their social media handles.

In this age where social media is ever-present in our lives, brands have realised that engagement and promotions across social media can have a huge impact on the company. Compared to traditional media, posting and sharing stuff on social media is also completely FREE OF CHARGE!

So, that is why you’ve been seeing more and more brand accounts on Facebook and/or Instagram. But don’t be thinking that this job will allow you to scroll through your Facebook all day! 

5. Social Media Influencers

Monthly earnings: RM1,000 – RM50,000
Job description: Social media influencers are basically individuals with a huge following, normally over 10,000 followings and more, on their social media accounts whose opinions can often influence their followers. This is why they often endorse or include product placements in their content.

Influencers have become very high in demand among big brands and they can usually be found on Instagram where they would do dedicated posts for sponsoring brands, just like this:

In Singapore, the top Instagram influencers with hundreds of thousands of followers can earn from RM3,000 to even RM18,000 per post. PER. POST!!! Can you imagine how much they’ll earn if they post just once every day?!

In fact, influencer marketing has grown so exponentially that they have replaced the way traditional marketing is carried out.
