It is known that Malaysians have a soft heart for beggars and street performers,  often opting to hand over some cash to help ease the burden of such people. However, what happens when it’s just foreigners taking advantage of our kindness?

Recently, a video went viral on social media where a pair of foreigners were spotted performing and collecting cash from onlookers at a restaurant in KL.

In the video, the pair were seen playing the drums and dancing in hopes of entertaining customers at an eatery.

The viral video attracted the attention of netizens who did not hold back in asking the authorities to take action against the two foreigners.

In a report by Sinar Harian, the two men were identified as Moroccans who had misused their social visit passes (PLS).

According to the report, the two were detained through the Ops Kutip KL Strike Force by the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department (JIM) at 1:30 am following a public complaint.

One of the detainees, who wished to be known as Khalid, 30, said that he and his friend played musical instruments while dancing to earn money for their livelihood.

“The musical instruments and traditional Moroccan clothing were brought from our country to perform every day from 10 pm to 1 am.”

“We came as tourists and stayed in a nearby hotel to sleep, play music, and earn money for food,” he said.

He further claimed that their activities could earn up to RM200 daily.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Immigration Director Wan Mohamed Saupee Wan Yusoff said that checks found both men had misused their social visit passes (PLS).

“Checks found that both entered Malaysia using PLS on October 11 for tourism purposes,” he said.

He added that the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department issued a stern warning to foreign tourists that using visitor passes to work, beg, and similar activities is an offense that can result in strict action.
