Lately, there has been an influx of street performers at tourist areas, especially those that are by the beach. Among these performers are fire dancers who have been spotted in places like Langkawi.
And while these performances are cool and all, are there safety guidelines in place to prevent risks and injuries?
Local doctor and traveler, Vivian Dominique, took to her Instagram account to showcase how she was burnt by a fire dancer while enjoying their show at a beach in Langkawi.
She wrote, “So, speaking from my own ill experience, stay away from bars that allow ‘outsiders’ to perform at their premises because they won’t hold any responsibility if these things happen. Secondly, if you still want to watch, watch from afar.”
“Thirdly, for families with kids, there are way better things to do in Langkawi than this. Avoid at all cost. Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, I hope there are regulations for activities like this.”
It all started when Dr. Vivian decided to check out the fire dancers’ performance out a famous tourist-y beach bar in Langkawi.
While sitting on a beanbag on the sand, she didn’t know that the fire dancers would also perform among the audience. Suddenly, a fire dancer performing directly behind Dr. Vivian dropped his fiery baton on her before quickly picking it up and running away.
“I was sitting at the second row and failed to realise that the performers will walk into the crowd with fire. While I was feeling relieved I wasn’t sitting in the first row, this happened. I was stunned for a few minutes, until I realised I was burnt,” she shared.
Dr. Vivian also added that she had to go treat herself as allegedly, no one approached her to assist her.
“I ran to the bathroom to do first aid on myself. Thank God, I am a doctor myself, because no one attended to me.”
Since then, the fire dancer in the video has reached out to WORLD OF BUZZ to share that he apologised to Dr. Vivian after his performance.
While it’s important for these fire dancers to earn a living through their performances, it is also important to maintain a level of safety not just for themselves but also for the audience watching them.
We genuinely hope that the authorities look into providing safety guidelines to these fire dancers.
